The Comfort Crisis

See this content in the original post

For 300 K years or almost 2M years or so we have been living a VERY HARD life.

We had to spend most of our time in harsh conditions OUTSIDE. We had to fight for survival and hunt.

So we evolved to survive those conditions and :

  • Eat a bit too much

  • Rest and enjoy comfort a bit too much

  • Solve problems a bit too much

Were all evolutionary advantages.

But our evolutionary instincts are AGAINST our best interest into this new modern abundance world. Which is bringing a lot of new and unknown problems in our rich modern societies.

But now we are in an abundance world And we are not made for it.

  1. Eating too much -> 70% of overweight or obesity, We had to invent DIETS.

  2. Too much comfort -> Unhealthy : Invention of GYM to compensate lack of movement.

  3. Too many stuff -> 10.000 items per average house (hoarding) "minimalism"

  4. Like problem solving -> Invent your own (pointless) problems ... "mindfulness", "gratitude", "service"

And the net result is that we are unsatisfied and unhappy in all this comfort, we constantly move the goal post, we are getting "used to" comfort and then get dissatisfied.

Solution is MORE HARSHNESS and LESS STUFF

If you think you can be more happy by having more stuff or more of that or easier life. You are wrong. It's never gonna work, it's an ever moving target.
